  • Chapter One Matt Dalton held his breath. The doctor removed his glasses, and tapped them against the document in his hands, his blank face conveying nothing of the opinion he was about to render. “Mr. Dalton, based on this report, I’d say there’s about a ninety-nine-percent chance this boy is your son.” Matt’s pulse raced. It’s what he expected, but the doctor’s words of confirmation made it real. Holy Christ, he had a son. He was a father. Nothing so profoundly life-changing had ever happened to him, and it took his breath away. He s ...continued...

The Cork connection & The Hi-B
Sunday, October 01, 1995 to Saturday, October 01, 2005
  • I regard the Hi-B bar to be a family gem. It must be treasured, jealously guarded and passed down the generations. Established in 1923 and originally named The Hibernian, my father must have been a patron of this establishment since its first beginnings. He was born in 1897 and spoke fondly of his time spent here, sometimes before and after a visit to Cork opera house. In the 1930’s he moved to England with the Ford motor company but a visit to the Hi-B was a mandatory part of our annual summer pilgrimage back to Cork. The Hi-B is situated on the first floor of the junction of Oliver ...continued...

  • As dad reversed mom came flying down wit a bag of snacks for the road. She gave it to me; we said our goodbyes and the journey began. A journey started with fear uncertainty and indecision How rude of me I didn’t introduce myself I’m Yasmin recently turned eighteen and right now on my way to my probable school of higher lea ...continued...

Diversity Resourses
Thursday, March 30, 2017 to Sunday, April 09, 2017
  • I found two great resources that were very informative and related to cultural awareness as well as health professions. Shaya, Fadia T., and Confidence M. Gbarayor. "The Case for Cultural Competence in Health Professions Education." American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 15 Dec. 2006. Web. 03 Apr. 2017. This first resource explains how it is necessary for cultural competence to be taught in health professional curriculums. This resource stated how it is necessary to look at the true health issues among dif ...continued...

i don't sing at birthdays
Wednesday, August 20, 2014 to Saturday, August 30, 2014
  • i don't sing at birthdays I pedaled my Schwinn Autocycle along the gravel road beside the Waterman's south pasture. The rutted road rattled the front fender almost enough to drown out my rendition of Gloria in Excelsis Deo. Almost, but not quite. Four of Charlie Waterman's cows standing by the fence-line mooed in tune to my song. I switched to Christ the Lord Is Risen Today near the intersection of the gravel and paved roads. Two lanky, flop-eared, black-and-tan hounds crawled out from under the front porch and added their howls in accompaniment. They ...continued...

Understanding Cultural Diversity Issues
Sunday, February 05, 2017 to Wednesday, February 15, 2017
  • I do believe I am an open-minded person and it is very important to me to understand and respect all different kinds of cultures. I think providing equal services to all clients and patients is important, because due to their race, culture, language barrier, gender, sexuality, etc... all of that is important to understand and take into account- but not to discriminate. It would be misconduct to treat a patient differently due to those factors. For example, for question 18. Some symbols—a positive nod of the head, a pointing finger, a “thumbs-up” sign—are u ...continued...

First 10 Years
Friday, February 16, 1951 to Thursday, February 16, 1961
  • Staying home alone was popular long before the movie. In the country, when there were only two choices: a. go fishing with my parents until the wee hours of the morning, or b. stay home alone, I pretty much always chose to stay home alone. I needed my alone time since much of the fishing trips were about my Mom and Dad gritching at each other over which eddy to fish or how going to shore was too costly to the numbers of fish to be caught. Staying home alone meant that i could listen to the Whiper Will without interruption. The frog ...continued...

Remnants of Life by Karen Goodson
Wednesday, March 23, 1955 to Tuesday, March 23, 2010
  • Driving down the road on a beautiful pre-Autumn day, the large red sign catches my eye. "Estate Sale 50% Off"…. I am torn, yet curiosity draws my car to the curb. As an avid garage sale seeker, I often enjoy the victory of the bargains I find while rummaging through items no longer wanted by the owner. But the items of my garage sale victories are most often found outside on the hard cement driveway or garage…unattached to story, emotion or the life that shared its journey. This Autumn day I find myself entering the E ...continued...

Tuesday, September 01, 1964 to Sunday, September 01, 1974
  • I love the bumper sticker that reads “Put something exciting between your legs.” In 1961 I bought a 1942 Harley for fifty dollars. I had to do it in secret because my father said I could only have a motorcycle over his dead body. One morning my father was having coffee at the local drug store with Mr. Wood, who had a son, Billy, who was a classmate of mine. “Frank,” he says, “my son wants to buy a motorcycle. I told him that no father in his right mind would ever let his son get something as dangerous as a motorcycle. Then he tells me, your son has one, so it must ...continued...

One for the Road
Monday, May 03, 2004
  • In order to ward off boredom on a solo trip from Kansas City to Denver, I jotted sights that caught my eye on the steering wheel. At my destination, I turned my scribbles into a poem. I don't recommend writing on the steering wheel--but in Kansas there's not much else going on. KANSAS CITY TO DENVER RUN My Grand AM and I off on early grey dawn journey to a writers conference through short rolling velvet fields shrouded in puffs of fog on I-70. Topeka gas station, fill Betsy's tan ...continued...

Self-assessment of understanding of cultural diversity issues.
Thursday, February 09, 2017 to Sunday, February 19, 2017
  • Although I never thought of myself to be 'prejudiced' or 'biased', I do understand that my beliefs would great impact my work as a healthcare professional. When I had taken the Cultural Competence Self Assessment Survery, I quickly came to a scary realization that I did know as much as I thought I did. For example, there was a question regarding non-verbal communication (pointing fingers, thumbs up, etc) that I had thought was universal. In fact, I was wrong, as I did not realize there are many different ways facial expressions and gestures could be interpreted as. Not surprisi ...continued...

  • Do you even look back on all those teenage expereinces you've had, Do you think about those defining moments, sick back in the open air theatre of your mind and just sit back and watch. I think about all those moments and how they have defined me, ok maybe not defined but they played a part in the paving the road that has gotten me this far. ...continued...
