Discussion One Due: 2/5/17 1. Hello everyone! I am Ellen Morrell. I am from the suburbs of Chicago originally. This is my first semester at UWM and I am very excited for this class. I graduated from Colorado State University in 2011 with a degree in Merchandising. I am interested in becoming a recreational therapist so I thought this program would be great to help me with my career goals. I wish I had known about recreational therapy when I was 18! I was originally interested in occupational therapy, unfortunately I did not get in my first round of applying. Although I will most likely reap ...continued...

Beliefs impacting Service Provided
Thursday, February 09, 2017 to Sunday, February 19, 2017
To what extent do my beliefs, prejudices or biases influence my thinking in terms of providing service in my profession or work? Include examples and reference areas for growth from the Provider's Guide to Quality and Culture quiz My beliefs influence my thinking when I provide service the most. I believe Prejudices and biases may impact who I think while providing services as well, although I try to learn about each person. My beliefs influence my thinking when I am working in several different ways. I believe in always being honest and trying my best. I believe you should tr ...continued...

Three Personal Goals
Thursday, February 23, 2017 to Sunday, March 05, 2017
1.) I would like to become more culturally competent in every aspect of my life, not only including race but people who are different from me.   2.) I would like to learn/study more about the cultures and backgrounds of potential future clients. Then I would like to retake the cultural competence quiz and obtain a better score.   3.) I would like to be able to create plans that would include plans the exhibit cultural competence in my current and/or future profession.    ...continued...

Comparing and Contrasting
Thursday, March 09, 2017 to Sunday, March 19, 2017
The first principal standard of the CLAS standards states one will provide effective and respectful care that is quality. Diverse cultural health beliefs and the language necessary will be used for communication needs. Standards for cultural competence for occupational therapist are very similar. I found principal standard that speaks to effective communication skills, listening carefully and language –oriented with recruiting translators. These two statements are similar to me, because they are providing a statement that says they will offer quali ...continued...

Diversity Resourses
Thursday, March 30, 2017 to Sunday, April 09, 2017
I found two great resources that were very informative and related to cultural awareness as well as health professions. Shaya, Fadia T., and Confidence M. Gbarayor. "The Case for Cultural Competence in Health Professions Education." American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 15 Dec. 2006. Web. 03 Apr. 2017. This first resource explains how it is necessary for cultural competence to be taught in health professional curriculums. This resource stated how it is necessary to look at the true health issues among dif ...continued...

Cultural Event
Monday, April 03, 2017 to Thursday, April 13, 2017
For my cultural event I went to an event called Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville, Illionois. I attended this event on Tuesday April 11th. Feed My Starving Children was a cultural event that felt like a great fit. I volunteered and had a chance to learn about different cultures and what their struggle was like in terms of children lacking food sources. We first walked into the building where we were greeted and told to sign in, grab a hair net and gloves, and to take a seat. Once everyone was seated there was a speaker who greeted us. There was a large amount of volunteeers th ...continued...

Cultural Competence
Thursday, April 13, 2017 to Sunday, April 23, 2017
Cultural competence has a great deal of meaning to me especially after taking this class. I define cultural competence by having the ability to be cultural aware of the differences of other cultures than of your own. It has a major impact on health care in our country because there are so many different groups and cultures of other people besides your own. I feel one is an ideal health care provider when they continually educate themselves on how to be culturally competent and understanding of others. I feel being culturally competent means making sure a patient you are working with understand ...continued...

Ellen Morrell Final Reflection Throughout this semester I learned such a great deal I didn't even imagine we would get through as much interesting material as we did. I felt this class was so special to me because it so important to constantly be learning about the culture and environment around us. Not only will this allow you to be a more well rounded human being but it will help vastly in the health workplace I am trying to achieve. I feel I can move forward in professional goals feeling more culturally aware and effective in the way I can communicate with clients or p ...continued...
